Summer Youth Film School

Association “Cinerama” organizes the summer youth film schools in the regional cities of Georgia the students of what are the young persons who are interested in filmmaking. They learn the theoretical and practical alphabet of film art and shot the short amateur films. Film school lasts two weeks, and its purpose is to promote non-academic, non-formal education among the pupils of the VII-XI classes of public schools in summer when they are on holiday.

The local city hall and the leadership of the local public school (or schools) participate in the preparation of educational and practical processes. Information about the project is spread by mass media and the Internet. The local educational resource center by a special survey or by presenting a writing motivation for the enrollment in the film school chooses 30-35 students.

The project takes place in one of the local public schools or pupil's palace and is arranged by the specialists assigned by the “Cinerama”.

The project provides invitation of two honorary guests – once in a week, for one day, is planed an invitation of one well-known Georgian filmmaker (film director, cameraman, actor, actress, etc.) who will provide a masterclass and in the evening will be organized the screening of his (her) film not only for the students of film school but for the local filmgoers too.

In the first stage of the project, the students have the theoretical lessons and prepare the scripts. In the second stage, they are divided into shooting groups and the skills obtained in the theoretical process they use in practical work – shooting and editing the film.

The premiere of these films takes place in the closing ceremony of Film school. All students are awarded certificates. The teachers make the titles and subtitles on the films and then all films are sent to the various international children and youth film festivals.

In July 2015 “Cinerama” arranged the first event – summer youth film school in Abasha in which the 30 students of the local public schools were involved. The result of it – short (approx. 7-10 minutes) fiction and documentary films since January 2016 were sent to suitable film festivals in many countries of the world.

In May of the same year, the films made in Abasha were presented in the competition program of the Tbilisi International Children Film Festival “Oqros Pepela” (“Golden Butterfly”). The film “school” was awarded by the prize of Best Editing, Gigi Korchilava received a prize for the Best Actor Boy for the film “The Bicycle”, and this last film received the Grand Prize of that Film festival. At the end of the same year, this film was awarded by the Audience Award of the Rio De Janeiro (Brazil) International Children Film Festival.

In summers of 2016-2018, the association organized the film schools in Abasha and Kutaisi. The films made during this period were sent to international film festivals too, and some of them received the important prizes in Ukraine, Croatia, Germany, and Greece.
